Information and Communication Technology

Introduction

Rishworth School ICT Department has two suites of networked computers running Microsoft Office 2003, together with various application specific packages.

The enthusiasm shown by students for computer technology is harnessed by the department with “hands-on” lessons in order to develop skills and experience. Students need to build confidence in using the technology to stand them in good stead for later life.

Information and Communication Technology at Rishworth

Years 7 - 9

All members of junior forms have lessons where they develop skills in using hardware and standard computer packages. They are expected to be confident, competent users of word processing, spreadsheet and database software by the end of Year 9. As part of this competence, all students will be provided with instructions on safe surfing and search techniques relating to the Internet. Elements of computer control and modelling will also be introduced through the study topics delivered.

Years 10 & 11

GCSE Information and Communication Technology is a popular option choice for Rishworth students. The course has a significant practical element and is assessed through a mixture of examination, assignments, project work and a timed task.

All students are able to use computer room facilities outside normal lessons for research and to complete project work.

Sixth Form

Advanced Level students follow the AQA course in Information and Communication Technology. Practical assessment through project work is an important element and accounts for 40% of the marks. Written examinations form the remainder. Year 12 students take A/S Level after the first year and may continue to the full A2 award.
