Science

Introduction

Science is a core subject within the school curriculum. The aim of the Department is to provide pupils with some insight into the workings of Science and how it impacts upon their life. The curriculum is designed to provide a logical progression in understanding scientific principles and how they can be applied in society.

As well as the theoretical aspects of each of the three sciences there is an accompanying programme of practical activity designed to encourage a spirit of enquiry within the pupil.

Science at Rishworth

Years 7, 8 and 9 are the developmental stages for Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum to which we adhere quite closely.

In Years 7 and 8 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes and put into sets from Year 9 onwards. The aim is to provide each pupil with a depth and pace of learning that are matched to their ability.

However, we are keenly aware that young minds can develop rapidly and so moving set is not something that will cause difficulty. The Department enters its pupils for national tests at the end of Key Stage 3.

The AQA Science and Additional Science specifications are followed for GCSE and within this syllabus all three sciences are taught.  The usual practice is to enter all pupils in the top set (and some from other sets) for the Higher Level papers, and to enter the remaining pupils for the level of papers that will maximise their GCSE performance.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered at both AS and A Levels and each of these follows totally new and up to date syllabuses.
