Heathfield Newsletter

Dear Parents,

The week before half term began with the Inter-Team Swimming Gala.  There were some excellent personal performances – including a record-breaking butterfly by Hannah Speakman – and some great support demonstrated by all pupils for their respective teams.  A huge thank-you is due to Mrs Bower for organising the event and also to all who came to watch, support, cheer and generally swelter.
Year 5 enjoyed a visit to Rishworth for a day in order to learn more about ceramics and to produce some work of their own.  They were also able to take in the Art Examinations display at Rishworth and see the amazing standard reached by our Senior pupils.
In the Foundation Stage, children continued to enjoy the pirate boats, trains and other forms of transport created in their outdoor area.  As well as the learning that takes place in the outdoor area, the construction and use of these different objects is really helping the children work and solve problems together.

Is it a train, or is it a pirate ship?  It is certainly a lot of fun!

Where would you go to get a glimpse of the future? Heathfield School at the end of last half term would be a good starting place: we celebrated our Theme day by investigating what things might be like in the future.  Children could dress up and there were plenty of rambling robots and amazing aliens – we had a visit from ‘The Men in Black’, a rocket landed in Foundation Stage and there were even future footballers reporting back on the success of the England World Cup hosting bid and a giant walking hot-dog!  It was difficult to make a decision about who had the most striking costume on the day, but eventually, I decided on Natalka Korolczuk, who had certainly created a detailed alien!  We also had a competition running to find the best pictorial representation of Heathfield 2099, depicting the School at the end of the century.  Artists were invited to use any medium and there were some brilliant ideas.  After another difficult process, Avani Grewal won with her wonderful imaginings – a School where children bounce in on personal trampolines and feast at restaurants before enjoying a relaxing roller-coaster ride.
There was more dressing up in the French Cafe last Wednesday: after a day of French activities, including a wonderful concert, bottle dancing, boules competition, Year 6 dancing the Can-Can and a visit from students at Rishworth to speak French with our younger students, we finished in the Dining Hall for a French meal.  Pupils waited upon each other: Charlie Scholey and Ben Rooney were noted for their excellent waiting and command of French respectively, but all members of Years 5 and 6 did a terrific job of waiting (and being waited upon) – all in French, of course!  Huge thanks are due to Mrs Kiy for organising the whole day and also to the PTA who were in the kitchens taking the waiters’ orders.
On Thursday our photographer returned to take photographs of our sporting teams and musical ensembles, to add to the class photographs taken earlier in the term.
As the School year approaches its end, I must comment on the fantastic work which our PTA undertake.  The function of the PTA is to provide special items, treats, days out and other items for all the children – but many of the events organised are also great opportunities to meet other parents and to simply have a good time.  We all very much hope that many more parents will volunteer themselves to get involved in the running of the PTA next year – like any organisation, ‘new blood’ is essential. Help is always appreciated and volunteering for one event does not entail volunteering for them all!  If you would like to get involved, an ideal place to start would be to come along and find out more at the AGM – details below.
Finally, could I once again remind parents or carers that some parking space is available in the area by the swimming pool – the Heathfield car park and the Mill Lane can become very congested for certain periods, especially at the start of the School day, so any measures which can be taken to relieve this jam are very much appreciated.  In any case, if parking a little further away encourages a short walk into School, children arrive energised and exercised.  Fantastic!

FOOTBALL FEVER AND LITERACY!

You are all no doubt aware that the World Cup 2010 begins this weekend.  Years 4, 5 and 6 have been ‘warming up’ for this international event by reading a live, ‘on-line’ story written by Tom Palmer.
Tom spent a day with us last year when he shared his passion for football and for writing, inspiring many of our pupils.  His debut children’s novel, ‘Foul Play’ had just been launched by Puffin and was thoroughly enjoyed by our Year 5 and 6 pupils.  He has since written a further two in the series featuring young football detective, Danny Harte: ‘Dead Ball’, set in Russia and ‘Off Side’ set in Africa.
In collaboration with The Literacy Trust, Tom is writing a special ‘live’ story.  It began on 7th June and is published every weekday morning at 8.00 am until 12 July.  The story is being followed by the children as a daily five minute classroom reading slot and will respond to real events and results of the World Cup Tournament as it progresses.
The unfolding story can be accessed at www.literacytrust.org.uk/worldcup.
It is a very exciting venture that we hope will really engage our older readers!
Come on England!!

Coordinator of Literacy

Please note there will be no Rounders Practice after Sports Day on Wednesday 16th June.  Thank you.

Last call for TESCO vouchers

We have arranged collection of our big bundle of Tesco Vouchers (over 8,000 at the last count) for 16th June, so we need to have them all bundled up ready for 9.00 am that morning.  Please have a last look round for any stray tokens and drop them into the PTA ‘bin’ outside Mrs Swallow’s office.

We have a bit longer to collect in the remaining Sainsbury’s tokens, but please make an extra effort to remember to bring those into School too.

Many thanks to all who have collected tokens for us, they are much appreciated.
