The PE Department is a thriving and successful department that not only excels in a wide range of sports but also caters for the demands of all standards of ability. The intention is to maintain and stimulate pupil interest and enjoyment in sports and to promote health and fitness for current and future lifestyles. It is also a major aim to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as humility, perseverance, politeness, initiative and independence via the establishment of pupil self-esteem through the development of physical confidence.

Music, Art and Drama thrive at Rishworth both as out-of-class activities and as academic subjects. All three can be studied to G.C.S.E. and “A” level, practised recreationally, or both.

A team of highly qualified specialist staff provides tuition in all orchestral and brass instruments as well as in other disciplines, including piano, guitar, drum-kit, singing, percussion, organ and electronic keyboard. Our pupils’ success in Trinity College Music Examinations and their achievements regionally and nationally are quite outstanding.

The teaching of Music has been much enhanced by the introduction of music technology where pupils can develop their composition and sequencing skills. There is a Choir , a Concert Band, Big Band and various small ensembles covering every musical family.

Instrumental players are always deeply involved in the musical festivals, concerts and recitals which are held every year, and which are of an exceptionally high standard. There have been music tours to Denmark, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy and France.

Many of our pupils are involved with groups, bands, choirs and orchestra both at a regional and national level. Music really is one of the treasures of Rishworth School and Heathfield and has been described as the only serious place to study Music in Calderdale.

The fine quality of Art at Rishworth is in evidence in the Department and is on display around the School such as in the Reception Area. Students gain genuine fulfilment by expressing themselves in drawing, painting, three-dimensional work, and other media. The keenest artists go on to study at some of the country’s most prestigious Art Colleges.

Drama is a popular and extremely successful subject in its own right. The opportunity to perform is given excellent foundation at Heathfield where productions are mounted at least twice a year. Recent Productions at Rishworth include, alongside GCSE and A Level productions, ‘Curiouser’, an intriguing modern reworking of Alice in Wonderland, the Tempest, the Snow Queen and ‘Wish Upon a Star’, a musical production by a Year 8 student who wished to raise money for a local children’s hospice.

Rishworth is fortunate to have a well resourced Performing Arts Studio / Theatre which has made it possible to stage a variety of challenging productions whilst enabling pupils to immerse themselves in every aspect of theatre performance and production.
