Dr Anthony Wilkins - Head

Welcome from the Head

From setting foot over our threshold you would immediately sense that Rishworth is more than an excellent School – it is a true community, a co-educational boarding and day school, taking pupils from the age of three through to eighteen. You would also see that every member of our community demonstrates a sense of purpose and a desire to get the most out of all the varied experiences on offer here.

The School was founded in 1724 and sought from its inception to deliver an inspirational education for girls and boys. The original school-house is now our private chapel, maintaining the important link with our earliest history. Our identity is characterised by intellectual curiosity, by a deeply established love of learning, and by the ability to be brave enough to be individual whilst also being a wholehearted member of the wider society. At Rishworth, we aim to celebrate the achievements of all and to use the confidence generated to inspire even greater accomplishments. We appreciate the benefits of a strong work ethic but we don’t forget to have fun either!

Rishworth School is set in 140 acres of beautiful Yorkshire countryside in the village of Rishworth. We are only half an hour from the city lights of Manchester, with all the international communications in that vibrant city, but we are very much a country school! Our boarding houses are cosy and family-centred, the secure havens needed by young people away from home for the first time. The Rishworth curriculum is designed to be exciting, challenging and innovative, individuated to particular requirements to cater for a wide range of students. Within our impressive Georgian buildings the teaching facilities are 21st century, including school-wide wi-fi enabling the most effective ICT-supported learning. Our results in public examinations are excellent, enabling students to progress to first-choice universities and pursue the most demanding courses.

Creativity flourishes throughout Rishworth School, gaining us an enviable reputation in our provision of music and the performing arts. We have also established a standing as one of the best schools in the region for sports, with academies and scholarships in rugby, cricket and badminton, with international-standard coaching. Programmes such as the Duke of Edinburgh and the Extended Project Qualifications are components of our wider focus on service, leadership and the building of character which helps Rishworthians become well-rounded, productive and successful contributors to a modern society.

Please take the opportunity to enjoy our on-line tour or make an appointment to visit the School in person – here at Rishworth we treat every day as an open day. We hope that you and your family will want to join us in the most exciting journey that there is – the growth of the next generation.
